“Tis the season, and if you still haven’t done the holiday decorating because you can’t get past the idea that Christmas decoration means tinsel and Grandma’s porcelain Santas, it’s time to think again. Or, if you’ve avoided it because of the daunting labor and expense, and besides it’s only temporary, and besides who needs it anyway….allow me to at least try to change your point of view. And you do need it, because a few holiday decorations are bound to get you in the proverbial Christmas Spirit, and we all need that. So here are just a few easy, light-handed (i.e. tasteful), and inexpensive to say “Christmas” in your home this year….and it’s not too late!
Keep the color palette simple. Silver, blues and greys are always elegant.
What’s easier than pine branches and pine cones? Go for a winter hike this weekend. Branches and cones are free when you find them on the ground!
Glass jars, some silver decorations and a bundle of sticks. Festive!
Just do me one favor and don’t forget the dinner table! Fir branches, pine cones and tea light candles. Done. If you are lucky enough to have some family silver sitting in a box somewhere that you thought you’d never use, well, now’s the time. Take a few minutes to polish it up, this one is worth the effort to add some timeless elegance.
And we all know the importance of curb appeal. The simplest thing to do outside is toss some greens into your existing window boxes or potted plants. Curly willow, red berry twigs, and red dogwood from the garden shop are great accents too. Add some white holiday lights – yes white, and only white – for a romantic nighttime glow.
And finally. The Christmas tree. So many shapes and styles. This is a classic Scandinavian tree: white lights, crafty ornaments. Perfect.
If you have limited space, there are endless options for small trees. Whether potted for spring planting, or a table-top style a-la Charlie Brown, the key is to keep the ornamentation ….yes, you heard it…..simple.
Most important of all of course, is to have fun! Enjoy your family, your friends, your blessings, and all the dreams of what’s still to come. SöKA Studio wishes everyone a happy, healthy and BEAUTIFUL holiday season!
